The choir is open to all adults with residence or contact with the village. There is no audition required as the ethos of the choir is to allow anyone who wishes to experience the fun of singing in a choir to come along and join in. We learn a variety of music from popular songs, favourites from the musicals, folk songs to classical pieces.
Since its formation in April 2012, the choir has already performed several times at village events including a Christmas concert with the Yorkshire Traction Honley Brass Band and a Summer Serenade together with some ensembles from Musica Shelley. There is a hard core of singers who have already formed new friendships and the choir prides itself on its sociable and welcoming attitude. All proceeds from our Concerts go to support charities, both local and national.
The Choir have performed Faure’s Requiem as part of the Village celebrations for the Tour de France, John Rutter’s Sprig of Thyme as part of our Taste of Spring, a programme of Film and TV themes and a selection of Opera Choruses. In the last year it performed Vivaldi’s Gloria, and an American themed evening.
We rehearse in St Thomas Church Thurstonland from 7:30 to 9:30 on Thursday evenings. There is a small charge of £2 each rehearsal to cover hire of the church and music.
The community choir is conducted by Robin Carmichael and accompanied by Angela Carmichael.
